Stone Walls & Patios in the Hudson Valley

Drive any back road in the Hudson Valley and stone walls line the way — fieldstone stacked by hand generations ago and still standing. That is the standard stone work here has to meet, and it is the craft we care about most. We build dry-stacked stone walls, bluestone patios and walkways: retaining walls with slate steps, curved garden walls, wide bluestone patios laid in pattern behind the house. The walls and patios in our photos are our own work — each stone chosen, turned and seated by hand until it locks against its neighbors. Dry-stacked means no mortar — the wall stands on weight, friction and the judgment of the person placing each stone. It is the traditional Hudson Valley method for a reason: water moves through the wall instead of freezing inside it, so winters that crack mortared walls leave a well-built dry wall alone. Patios get the same thinking underneath — excavated, based and compacted so bluestone sits flat through freeze and thaw instead of heaving in March. We build new walls and patios, walkways and steps, and we rebuild old walls that have started to lean or spill, reusing the stone that has been on the property longer than the house next to it.
